my country & E system

My point of discussion is the need of change in our Education system and how can we change it? I wish to make everyone understand that, to change any situation we need ….

1. to know where we stand today.

2. to analyze why are we like this & how we can change in the future.

3. to act pragmatically to achieve what we desire to be in the future.

Before moving onto the main subject, I’d like to discuss about the present state of politics, civil society, our educational system & their interdependency.

Now, I put forward my analysis below:

What is the relation between political system & civil society?

Political system is the one which is capable of controlling the other systems like judiciary, police, administration etc. Top of this political system is the civil system/society which must govern it and this is ensured to happen through the election process.

But the apathy here is that, the civil system/society which must be governing the political system is blindfolded about the role & responsibility bestowed on it.

Present situation

After 62 years of independence, 60 years of republic India.

We have many questions in our life like “what are we?”, “where are we?” and “why are we like this?” we answer these in criticism rather than giving solutions. As citizens of this nation we all are unhappy about the political, civil & the judiciary systems. Why do we have this dissatisfaction? To know this, first let’s look into the details of some the important systems that governs the country.

First: the Political system

What do we feel about our politics & politicians? That most of them are not worth to be the representatives of the people. Since they are corrupted, have criminal background & consider politics as an investment vote market (something like share market) which returns heavy profits to them after getting elected. Irrespective of all these, at the end of the day these are the individuals who finally get elected to the parliament. To be more precise its “we the people” who give them the power & courage to be so by electing them.

Analysis

Why are they elected by the voters in spite of knowing their true color & character? This happens because majority of voters lack knowledge about the actual power of their vote. They are also unaware about the consequences of selecting a wrong representative as they have minimal knowledge in evaluating a candidate. Most of the voting population is uneducated as citizens. Why are the people like this and how can we change them?

Second: the Civil system

It is the civil society and its behavior in different aspects of life. Civil society means, the ideology, behavior, practices & actions of people in their daily life. We all are unhappy about our civic life, about the hygienic conditions, adulteration, traffic sense, lazy & corrupted behavior of public servants & many more….

Analysis

As individuals & human beings we are not bad by nature. But why are we like this today? Because it’s our ignorance towards the basic responsibilities & moral ethics that one has to follow in every step of his life. How can we make people understand this? It’s very difficult to make such a huge population understand this. Then what is the solution to bring about this change ?????

All above, I was showing the real facts which are leading to the systems inefficiency. How can we change this? Can it be done by a single person alone? The answer is NO then what’s the solution? Change in a system can be brought by another system only.

I have a solution to bring change in the people & the future generations to come. And this is only possible through the “EDUCATION SYSTEM”. It is the only medium which can reach the millions in this country. It is the only primary system capable of shaping the thoughts of an individual. The points below emphasize “why education system is the only channel that can bring change?”

Before moving ahead lets also look into the present situation of our education system & try to understand the true meaning of education.

Our E system largely comprises of science & mathematics. And it is praised for its high technical values around the world. It is largely capable of producing excellent engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc. But forgot to produce a good citizen. This is a real shame on our E system.

We are more concerned about the marks that a student achieves in different subjects, but never think how many marks he/she can secure on social responsibility, morals & ethics.

We are proud to tell that a 5yr kid is capable of reciting 10th table, but never bothered if he even knows a small moral story. Why is this so?

Let’s look at our education course/syllabus of primary & secondary education. Class I to X text books just teach you how to become a good engineer, doctor, lawyers etc. But no where you find the books teaching the rights & responsibilities of an individual towards his country in an effective way. And also you never find a place for moral ethics. One should remember that education must be at the over all development of the child

We may think why we need to teach people about their rights, responsibilities & ethics?

Yes, there is a need to make people enlighten about all these, since all the negative points that I have shown about our country(political system& civil system) is the result of our lack of knowledge on all the keys points/issues. Hence we “The People” who are indirectly responsible for current state of our country.

But when the same people come to know about their rights, responsibilities & ethics, they will start behaving as good citizens. When each Person turns to be a good Citizen it leads to the country’s prosperity.

Now the question is, “How can we produce good citizens?”

My focus is on young individuals because we all are aware that it’s possible to bend a plant & almost impossible to bend a tree. Here the plant is the future generations to come which can be easily molded & tree is the present generation which is stagnated with its thoughts and highly difficult to change.

Here I make a strong recommendation to include good citizen oriented syllabus at an extensive level in the primary education & slowly reduce it in the higher education. This type of education is needed in schools because kids spend most of their time & also learn most of the habits in school. Also repetitive teaching of good at younger age will develop good thoughts in kids to become a good citizen first & then good professionals.

Here teaching of “good” means making people understand about their constitutional rights, social responsibilities and moral ethics to be followed. This approach towards the education might have a negligible effect on the main technical oriented education. But this type of education will surely achieve an extra-ordinary change in the entire society in the coming years.

A clear example of this is our Indian civilization itself, which lasted for more than 3500 yrs just because of the good citizen oriented teachings.

We all should recollect that probably 30-40 ago we had a subject called moral sciences, which was taught in schools as a part of curriculum at primary level. The reason for teaching such subjects at foundation level is to maintain good will at the base of society. Now present generation doesn’t even know that such a subject was ever taught in schools.

I strongly feel that good thoughts implemented as righteous actions make a nation more prosperous than anything else.

Before I conclude I like to emphasize on the following:

Let us enlighten the educated people to know their responsibilities & the uneducated about their rights.

Lets us stop teaching only about how to make a living & let us start teaching about life.

Change in society comes in 2 ways one as revolution & second is HABITUAL.

Sravan, I do not believe in this because we have syllabus in the school that does tell us about our roles and responsibilities as a citizen. I learnt it in Social Sciences (CIVICS). It does lay out clearly what are we and what should we do. How constitution should be our playing field.
The other part of being proud when a 5 year kid student recites a 10 table is true but I think people like it more if kids are able to recite songs, poems and the biggest thing I find that is not in this article is that we are all forced to memorize stuff rather than think different.
Moral sciences was a good point. I am glad you did not miss it.
I understand you are proposing a change but, what are you validating this with? How can you say changing education system will bring in the changes you are aspiring? India today is growing because of its Maths and Sciences only. I appreciate your thought of telling all of us that Maths and Science alone should not be the point of focus for all of us. I think that has already changed in India, we have all new developments happening and just that they are not being focused more or sidelined.
I am surprised that you have not highlighted the role of media at all. Its high time Media stops trying to increase their TRP ratings. They should be made socially responsible. Lt me ask you one thing, which will gain more publicity in Hyderabad, ” KCR’s hunger strike” or “Achievements of Abdul Kalam” I think it’s the latter in the current circumstances. So media should play a filtering role here. They support themselves by telling that they are bringing everything to the eyes and ears of the audiences, but what they do not try to understand is that this will escalate the matters always. Sometimes ignorance will be bliss. They overlook that. They fight for their rights and make a huge cry and fuss about everything if that affects them directly.
To get good society Media should play a very important role.

  2. You r one of those who can proudly say "be the change you want to see in the world". Am sure each one of us want India to change but let that not be just a "want", rather act on it and do your part well. Each one teach one. Hope to see our everlasting "developing" India as Developed Nation. We all know that we have the potential to make this happen, small an each step will make it big some day. Starting from our daily activities, how we drive, how we maintain hygeine in public, giving bribes, dicremination on caste..... I do and know that we don't do thongs as we are supposed to do. Better late than never start now. Even Taj was not built in a day...

Saravan is one of those guys who want and stive for betterment of india. I realized and act with responsibility due to him. Each one teach one. I will teach one too. Bottom line action speaks louder than words.

Be good, do good else atleast don't do bad. Jai hind.
